Liquid Modernity

Vloeibaar (Liquid Modernity) – Inkjet op acryl 80 x 80 cm (2026) “Liquid Evil” is the title of a 2016 book by the Lithuanian philosopher Leonidas Donskis, written in collaboration with the Polish-British sociologist Zygmunt Bauman. In it, they describe how, in our deregulated societies, evil is no longer confined to clearly defined ideologies, but exists in a diffuse form and can be found everywhere in hyper individualism, deregulated markets and diminsihing solidarity.

On Cruelty

‘On Cruelty’ – kunstdruk op acryl 90×90 cm diagonaal (2025) The subtitle of this work, which can be found in its chaotic typography, is: ‘How are you cruel?’ Or: ‘How cruel are you?’, which is a much more direct question.
History teaches us that crimes against humanity are not only committed by a handful of perpetrators, but are above all enabled by collective complicity: looking the other way, normalizing, accepting, or even facilitating systems that legitimize cruelty. Because we remain silent, comply, refuse to question how our own actions or inactions, we contribute to a society in which cruelty can thrive.

Photo on location - detail The key question is how we, through both small and big choices, are complicit too. Collective cruelty does not just stop with its perpetrator—it begins and ends with everyone’s ability to take responsibility for it.

Weight, monument for Comma Seperated Values

Weight – A monument for Comma Seperated Values – sublimaie print op aluminium 80×80 cm (2025) ‘Weight-Monument for Comma-Separated Values’ refers to a file format for data, the CSV file. This file type is used to store sequences of numbers, separated by commas. As such, it plays a significant role in large language models, the LLMs we usually refer to as ‘AI’. These CSV files are used in the development of these predictive computer models for the input, output and integration of data – our data. Our texts, our movements, our words, our music and our images. As such, it plays a crucial role in how our society is analysed and exploited, and in how decisions are made accordingly.

MEME

MEME Meme is, in its original meaning*, a unit of cultural information, like an idea, a behavioral pattern, a style, or a symbol that propagates itself through sharing and copying, much like genes in a biological sense. Just like genes, memes can mutate and evolve within a culture, and they function as small units of social and cultural transmission.

MEME – Sublimation print on aluminum, 80×80 cm (private collection) In ‘MEME’, these smallest units are divided into two equal parts: ME and ME. Each ME has an unique colorvalue, except at the bottom right. There we can see the black outline of a counterclockwise swastika emerging, traditionally a symbol of prosperity.
* The term “meme” was introduced in 1976 by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in his book “The Selfish Gene.” He adopted the term from the Greek word “mimema” (something that is imitated) to describe cultural elements such as fashion, melodies, or skills.

SQ3

SQ3 – inkjet op acryl 80×80 cm “SQ 3” is the third print in a series of abstract works in which colour brings dynamics to a set of simple rules. The design was created directly in computer code, which has been converted into a beautiful sublimation print on aluminium.

UNDO

UNDO – Fine Art print on watercolour paper – 160×40 cm 'UNDO' is a moment that I instinctively wanted to reverse, but couldn't. An accident that I unwillingly witnessed years ago. Like ‘Fast Forward', it is a relatable reaction to something that inevitably became a reality. Moments like these can get stuck in your mind for years, as if they were etched into your brain with a needle.

Fast Forward

Fine art print on watercolor paper (artist's collection) – 150×80 cm The concept for this print originated from a conversation with Astrid at our breakfast table. We were experiencing the emergence of the coronavirus pandemic, the day after the initial lockdowns were announced. We talked about how we would love the ability to quietly fast-forward the world, to spare everyone from enduring the trying times ahead.

Photographs on location In the Fine Art print, the colors are more vibrant than I dared to hope for. I love the kinetic energy of color. Watching how the pigmented ink has saturated the woolly fibers of the watercolor paper is an almost physical sensation for me.

The digital version of “Fast Forward” “Fast Forward” is next to “UNDO” the second work that deals with the inevitability of what has become true.

SQ 1

Sublimation print on aluminum (matte) – 80×80 cm (private collection) “SQ 1” is the first in a series of abstract designs in which color is used to create depth and movement within a set of simple rules. The artwork was originally created using computer code, which was then converted into a beautiful sublimation print on aluminum.

SQ1 on location (private collection) These works are written in Scalable Vector Graphics or SVG computer language. These are simple mathematical instructions that describe lines, shapes, and colors. The abstraction of typing coordinates and color values helps me discover combinations that I wouldn't normally think of.

SQ1 on location (private collection) SVG code has been developed to create optimized images for web pages. The code I write is converted through a few simple steps into an instruction file for inkjet and sublimation printers, which can then produce the image on paper, acrylic, or aluminum.

So Long, and thanks for all The Fish

So long and thanks for all the fish The title of this print is taken from Douglas Adams’ science fiction series *The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy*. In the book “So long and thanks for all the fish” is the misunderstood farewell message from the dolphins, who leave Earth just before it is destroyed.

Bad penis

Bad penis - Fine Art Print on watercolour paper 50 x 50 cm 'Bad Penis' is the ironic title of this print, which was created at the height of the 'Me Too' movement. A movement dedicated to emancipation and participation that causes a great deal of justified outcry and mercilessly exposes abuse.

Die Welt weint

“Die Welt weint” – Fine art print an watercolourpaper – 50×50 cm “Die Welt weint” is an image of mourning, where suffering is found behind thick walls and closed doors. It is an icon of a biblical flood, a story of blood-red tears that a god sheds over his failed creation.

“Die Welt Weint” is part of a series of icons from 2019.

Denkmal für die inoffiziellen Mitarbeiter

Denkmal für die inoffiziellen Mitarbeiter - sublimation print on aluminium – 80x80 cm 'Denkmal für die inoffiziellen Mitarbeiter' is a memorial to the “unofficial employees” of the Stasi regime in the former German Democratic Republic, the snitches. These collaborators were ordinary people – neighbours, or a niece, for example. Your own children. It is a monument to a politicised society and, as such, timeless and (unfortunately) still relevant today.
